When we understand that privileged people derive material benefits from the exploitation of oppressed people, and that this means we benefit from the violence used to keep them down, we cannot sincerely condemn them for violently rebelling against the structrual violence that privileges us.

Society’s wariness toward sex is highlighted by contrasting it with the greater societal tolerance toward violence. This dichotomy is especially vivid in the media and mass culture, where violent depictions are far more accepted than sexual ones. The contrast was aptly capsulized by Martin Shafer, a top executive at a film production company, when he noted, ‘If a man touches a woman’s breast in a movie, it’s an R rating, but if he cuts off a limb with a chain saw, it’s a PG-13.’

October 21st, after six days of peaceful occupation in Melbourne, Australia, the police brutally removes the protesters…

In 1965, at Jackson, Mississippi, Matt Herron took an iconic and ironic image from the civil rights era as a white policeman rips an American flag away from a young black boy, having already confiscated his ‘No More Police Brutality’ sign.

the symbolism of this gives me shivers. it never did change.

“Mothers, fathers and loved ones of those who died in New York, today is the 38th anniversary of our tuesday 11th of september, and the 10th anniversary of yours. We will remember you. I hope you will remember us.”  – Pablo

The phrase the ‘discovery of America’ is obviously wrong. What they discovered was an America that had been discovered for thousands of years before by its inhabitants. Thus what took place was the invasion of America – an invasion by a very alien culture.

If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.

… [F]or the oppressed, violence is always legitimate (since their very status is the result of the violence they are exposed to), but never necessary (it will always be a matter of strategy whether or not use violence against the enemy).

We Americans claim to be a peace-loving people. We hate bloodshed; we are opposed to violence. Yet we go into spasms of joy over the possibility of projecting dynamite bombs from flying machines upon helpless citizens. We are ready to hang, electrocute, or lynch anyone, who, from economic necessity, will risk his own life in the attempt upon that of some industrial magnate. Yet our hearts swell with pride at the thought that America is becoming the most powerful nation on earth, and that she will eventually plant her iron foot on the necks of all other nations.
